Another Day, Another Leak

Walked out of my office, saw a puddle of oil under the bike.

F*(&*&^*$^*&*$%#*!#@$^!^*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4th oil leak in under a year. And this was in a new spot - looked like it was coming from above the oil filter.

Checked the oil level - looked ok so I drove to the dealer...you know, the guys who fixed it last time...and the time before that...and...you get it...

Turns out it was leaking from an electrical switch (neutral indicator?) just above the oil filter.

Dealer's mechanics said they had never seen that one before.

I know I got some hate here last time I bitched about an oil leak (caused by either factory or dealer's over-torquing of the cover bolts) but I'm going to say it now. Last chance. I love the feel and style of this bike, I love the ride, but one more problem and I'm going to be looking for a new bike. Maybe Triumph, maybe not...but My overall impression of this engine so far is that it's a piece of sh*t.

Good thing you didn't ride English bikes back in the old days.

Cheers!

You would be incorrect. I did. I expect the leaks and fuse replacement on the old ones. They give the bikes "character"
What I don't expect is that a brand new bike thet is built in "one of the most advanced factories in the world" to have 4 major leaks in the first 5000 miles. I use this bike as my everyday transportation and I need it to work correctly. Hopefully this is the last problem and I'll stop complaining, but I want to put this out there to see if these problems are unique to my bike (I got a lemon?) or common to the 790cc engine.

I bought my '04 790ccm this Spring with 4600kms on the clock. No record og oil-leaks. Now it has 14000 on the clock and still no leaks.

Maybe you got a lemon. Maybe the mechanic does something wrong.

Good luck whatever your decision.

ok

My 2005 T100 is totally oil tight. Its parked at my house in the same spot and never a hint of oil on the ground! (except when I did an oil change myself and bumped the oil pan after scorching my arm on the exhaust!!)
I had a BSA gold flash in the early 70's (a10) and topping up the oil tank was a weekly job!!

My 2001 has 27K on it and has never leaked a drop. Its sounds like you need a new mechanic...not a new bike. Anything with a gasket can leak...its all in how its repaired.

Mattrat...

four leaks would push me to the edge as well. Fortunately, in the brief time I've had my '06 (3-months - 2500 miles) not a drop.

As was said before, if you like the bike, try a new mechanic before you give up on it.

Good luck!

Arrow New mechanic

Matt - I feel your pain brother! I suggest as a last attempt to take it to Libby's and see if they can fix it. This way you will now know whether it is the bike or the mechanic and then you can decide your future plans from there.

Earl Leak

My '06 was leak free thru break in, (dealer serviced it) then @ 3,000 I changed the oil myself & within 48 hours the valve cover gasket started leaking, as did the sensor area just rear of the oil filter. Dealer replaced the gasket & told me I was a bit over filled on the oil. When I changed it I filled it just shy of the upper line on the sight glass. Shop mechanic said as long as it shows in the glass you are good. (On the center stand on level ground I should add.) It seems plausible the higher pressure would seek the path of least resistance, and since that time I've taken the mechanics word and filled the oil closer to the lower indicated line, I keep an eye on it and nothing leaks & the oil level remains constant. I have 10,000 miles now. Related?!? Coincidence?!? I don't know but otherwise trouble free. Good Luck!

oil leaks

My Bonnie hasnt leaked yet. I changed the oil at 5300 miles, and now at 6000 there are still no sign of leaks. still get a little of the cosmoline from the head on real hot days, but not oil leaks.
