Chain Life?

How long shold a chain last, with moderate (occassional hooning) riding habits?
I've noticed mine needs adjusting more frequently and I'm wondering if i should replace it?
Thanx for any advise. You guys rock!

Your owners' manual shows how to measure it for a replacement check [ not to be confused with a tension check]. I would think this to be more reliable than how many miles are on it, as the miles may have been under varying conditions such as too tight/loose, aggressive riding, poor lubrication, etc. I have heard these new chains last quite awhile compared to the old ones, however.

16,000 miles, only on the 2nd adjustment notch, only needs adjusting probably once every 400 miles maybe more depending on the type of riding.

12k miles, the chain has been adjusted twice. I'm not the best when it comes to chain maintenance, but I'm getting better. Cleaned and lubed about every 600-700 miles. I use DuPont Teflon Multi-Spray.

I got 25K out of the chain...and I was well past the last adjustment. Two to three lubes a year with one adjustment every 4K when I change the oil. Chain life depends on the environment, lube and adjustments. Too tight ...this stretches the chain quickly and puts unnescessary load on the transmission bearings and seals at the sprocket.

At 7500 miles, I lube every 1000 miles or so, and it's had no real adjustment yet after the 500-mile service. I've had the wheel off a couple times, but the chain went back where it was, directly on one of the alignment marks. I leave it on the slack side of the spec, as recommended by the Rats here.

I expect at least another 7500 miles, if not much more.

More frequent lube equals more mess, and I'm not convinced that it's necessary. The chain moves freely and looks good, as do the sprockets.

I would never dream of lubing less often than every 500 miles
