What the heck?!???
AARRRGH!!! My brand new Scrambler, less than 1000 miles,is leaking oil! Not a whole lot.Just a couple of drops, after it's been parked awhile.Seems to be dripping off the bottom of the starter. Anybody else have this particular leak? Any idea where it might be coming from? I'd kind of like to make sure that my dealer has the parts in stock,or can order them in before I take it in. They are a P.I.A. to get to from here.Through 22 miles of dense, take your life in your hands, city traffic.Maybe they can fix it while I wait(yeah, right).
I'm all for tradition, and all,but I already have a shop full of British oil squirters, thank you very much.
Well,I guess it's comforting to know that some thing really do never change.
So much for Hinckley over Meriden. So much for Thailand over Britain.
Whatever...........

Rats!

cosmoline?
The factory puts cosmoline on the motor before shipment to prevent rust. Looks like oil but it isn't. Hope this is your case, and I'll bet it is. Take a deep breath and relax. I know I did once I found out about it.

comando,
I wouldn't worry I think you have a isolated incident. as far as a dealer - you may just want to fix it your self, youll also have better QC on the bike as well.
good luck

Thanks guys, I don't think it's the head gasket Mayfiebl. I don't see anything running down, but I'll take a closer look.
Doogin,I had some cosmoline drips the first couple of days.Nope,I'm afraid this is good ole Mobil 1.
By the way,did my brother ever get a hold of you?
TTBonnie, I'm just going to run it over to PIM,and let them fix it.It's under warranty for 2 more years,I might as well take advantage of it. As far as an isolated incident,I think I'd prefer it to be something fairly common,so there's a well known solution. Sorry to sound like a dips**t,but what is QC?
I think it's probably coming from where the starter goes into the primary. I don't know if there's an o-ring,or lip seal,or gasket,or what there.
Really need to get me one a them service manual thingamajigs...........
Thanks,again.
Bruce

commado oil leaks are a pain, i suspect that your mechanically minded and the bike is being fixed under warranty, but the one thing i have found on this forum that guys receive a lot of advice here ,and not many report back on what the problem was when its been fixed but yours sounds interesting ..

commando- there are 2 allen keyed plugs behind the starter, they are oil galley plugs. On mine, neither had sealer , and 1 was a tad loose, and leaked. I had to remove my starter, remove both plugs, use thread sealer and tighten them down- end of problem. I decided to do this myself, altho the dealer offered to, he needed my bike for the day. I did it myself in 1 hour, and back on the road

Just got my bike back from the dealer last week. I had an oil leak coming from behind the starter, and as Geoff said mine was a leak from the oil galley plugs, plus the dealer found a small leak from a bolt near the sprocket. All fixed under warranty, first time my bike as seen the dealer in 2 years.
