How to take the headers off...

I've seen some nice blacked out headers on various threads recently. I'm going to paint mine out with engine paint. What's the best way to take 'em off, and prep 'em?

They unbolt easily. You would be better off having them Jet Hot or Ceramic coated. Header paint doesnt hold up well. If you really want to do this, thourghly scrub the pipe. follow with prepsol. Lightly scuff the pipe. Clean again with prepsol, allow to dry. One very light coat of paint. Allow to dry overnight. Light scuff again. Follow with two or three thin coats.

My headers are painted with BBQ black spray paint and it holds up just fine.

I scuffed the chrome with a 60 or 800 grit sanding block then laid down one coat of the BBQ paint, and let it dry out in the sun for a couple hours. Then scuffed the paint with 0000 steel wool, and then 3-4 more coats of paint with 0000 steel wool after each coat (and after the last coat too).

It's held up well and looks good, just keep gasoline off it!

Removing headers: Obviously take the mufflers off first, then you may have to remove the footpegs (can't remember) then there are 2 bolts under the footpegs holding the headers to the frame. There are 2 nuts holding the headers to the studs in the head, and the clamp that holds the 2 crossover pipes together. My crossover pipes were a BEE-YOTCH to get separated. Lots of sweat and swearing and yanking.

be sure to loosen one pipe at a time. that way when the crossover pipe is being "bee-yotchy", you can twist the loosened pipe, which in turn, twists the "bee-yotchy" crossover pipe.

Mask the bike

I painted mine today! I was gonna remove the headers, but it turned out to be not so easy. So I spent an hour or so masking the bike up. The paint i used allowed recoating in 30 mins. So i did several light coats over the day, then baked them on with a ride this arvo(smoked a tad!). Sweet! Looks GOOD!!!
