yet another dumb question

Okay so I hate the football grips on my Bonneville. To that end I went and ordered some Grips that are on the Thruxton. These grips are nice and flat and not oval. Question I have is how do I swap em out? Are there tools I will need? Or is it "just yank em off and slide the new ones on"

Cheers!™

It's not as simple as yank them off, but you've got the right idea. A bit of warmth helps get them off - hot water or perhaps a hair dryer. You may also need a long thin screwdriver to poke down between the grip and the handle bar - to release the stickyness. Then just pull and twist them off.

If all else fails get a sharp knife and cut the awkward feckers off.

Fitting the new ones is the opposite of removal (obviously with out the blade) a spray of WD40 on the bars first will help you get the new suckers on.

Warning you may end up with blisters in the palm of your hands

A trick from the scooter community: use hairspray to get the new ones on - very slippery while wet but when it dries it'll keep the grips from coming off.

if you don't think you'll be keeping the old grips, there's nothing wrong with taking a razor to them...

I cut all my grips off with a razor. You don't like them, so hack them off. I also race motocross so I have to replace grips a lot. Hairspray or grip glue provides a good lube to get them on because they won't slip after install and drying.

I wouldn't put WD-40 on my bars.

When I switched my grips, went from stock to football (love the footballs), I put the air nozzle from my compressor up to the end, shot 60psi of air under the grip and give a little wiggle. I had both grips off in less than a minute (no blisters).

To put the new grips on, I also used the hairspray trick. Few squirtz of the stuff is enough to slide the grip on. It dries pretty quickly and you have no worries about em slipping. I had both new grips on in about a minute (no blisters).

Hope it helps.

All helpful information, but 7/8" Thruxton grips aren't gonna fit on 1" Bonneville handlebars... if that's in fact what you have.

aren't all bars the same size at the bar ends regardless of a 7/8's bar or a 1 1/8 bar?

Well all things aside...

Well I looked at them at the dealer, asked the mechanic "will these fit my bonneville?" he said yes and we ordered them. I am at work and wont know till I get home but I just took a measurement of the inside of the grip (the throttle one btw as it has a plastic sleeve inside it) and it is 1 inch. So unfortunately I wont know till I get home and try it this evening. I will post later on that.
And thanks for the hairspray trick btw I wouldnt have thought of that!

Cheers!™

You can get tapered bars, but I doubt whether thruxtons do, Bonnies are 1" all the way along
