checking mixture?

hi guys, i was just wondering how you guys check your mixture settings to know if your running lean or rich, other than looking at the plugs that is

the way i was taught was to check it on cars was to mist some carb cleaner over the carb and when it bogged down it was rich and when it raced it was lean then find a happy medium

would that work with the air box in place?

Wouldnt work with air box, as its a common air feed to 2 carbs. not sure if it works at all, tell you the truth I have not heard of that one.
I use the plugs, seat of the pants feel, and finally a dyno check to verify my settings(or not)
Also, I know by the pilot jet, and how many turns out the pilot screw is, about where it is, in the lean to rich area.
What are you setting up, maybe I could give you a baseline

The way I did it with my old Beemer was to warm up the motor, disconnect one plug, and bring up the idle until the one cylinder would stay lit on it's own. Then screw the idle mixture screw in and then out until you find the happy medium between a high idle and an rpm drop. Once you're satisfied, switch the leads and do the other side. Once both are done, reconnect both spark plug leads and adjust your idle to around 1100 rpms. This will get you right where you need to be...

Running with a plug wire disconnected will wreck the igniter, but you can hook it up to a spare plug and ground it to the motor securely
