Snorkel removal – what effect?

so I pulled the snorkel (rubber thingy under the left side cover) after reading here somewhere that I would get better sound after this "47 second job". No problem there, sounds pretty good. I was curious though, what if any effect will this have on performance and/or with the way the bike runs generally (you know – fuel air mixture and all that hocus-pocus). Maybe a stupid question, but I'd like to hear from someone knowledgable about this. Thanks.

I pulled the snorkel after I put Togas on and rejetted. With the free flowing exhaust and enough gas to support it, there was an extremely noticeable improvement in getting to the rev limiter when I pulled the snorkel. I didn't believe it at first so I made a few runs with and without the snorkel. Now the snorkel has been living comfortably in a box in the basement for over two years.

Thanks for the reply. What about with the stock exhaust, should the jets be changed if the snorkel is removed?

No and you probably won't notice any difference in running either, I never anyway but left it off for improved air flow anyhow.

I'm running aftermarket exhausts, stock airbox, 118 main jets, and I didn't notice a **** thing.

Tor's and rejet and I definitely noticed not only a very nice deepening in the tone of the exhaust but it did indeed rev easier. It was breathing ... There was a cool sucking noise too! LOL

I too being a skeptic put it back on and took it off several times to ensure I wasn't imagining things. it is simple to take off and put on so go ahead and try it and see for yourself.

Yeah, I notice she's louder (sounds pretty good) – just wonderin' if it's ok to run like this. Guess so. Not all replies directly apply to my situation with stock exhaust, but I do appreciate the feedback.

What's it good for?

Hello.
I've now read several times about removing this snorkel. And somewhere I read about a Bonnie-owner who punched about 60 holes in it (or the peice that goes into the air-filter). I'm just wondering: If almost everyone says "remove it" - why is the snorkel put there in the first place

1. To make it quieter.
2. To make it harder for squirrels to nest in your airbox in the winter time.
3. To keep rain out.
