gasoline/petrol in airbox

was wondering what would lead to petrol/gas in the airbix. found a bit of a puddle (mixed with oil im still getting trickling in), but mainly the air filter smells strongly of it, and its strangling power.

changed out the air filter, but a day later back to its strangled smelly self.

leads, coil and cdi are apparently fine (so says the dealers), but theres a horrible firing (sounds like a constant but not total misfire in one of the cylinders) and exhaust sound (staintunes)

Think im destined to own a bike with a permanent limp!!!

So what would be the causes of petrol in the air filter/box??

thanks in advance guys.

mlc...had a similar problem about a year ago. Found a puddle of gas under my bike, the airbox had gas in it and the uni filter was soaked...all due to a sticking float valve in the carb.
Cleaned and dried the airfilter, took the float bowls off and sprayed the inside of the carb with carb cleaner and did an oil change just in case the oil got polluted with gas (think I read in here somewhere that gas can find its way into the crank case through the breather hose somehow).

Sorry mlc...I noticed the puddle first and never fired-up the bike. Then, because I remembered reading the bit about gas getting into the crank case, I got worried and replaced the oil and filter.
I'm just wondering if that's not what happened in your case and your oil is now diluted with gas. I would check the sight glass on your motor and see if the oil level is still where it should be or if it's totally covered. Good luck.

Sure does sound like a sticking float needle alright, keep your fuel tap closed when not in use til you get it sorted.

thanks guys - its at the dealers now. im just trying to circumvent a little bit of head scratching thats going on at the moment. its been raining heavily and theyre yet to take it out for a run. even though the problems are evident at idle...

on a side note - have a CBR900RR loan bike - and holy cr ap. May lack the character of the bonne - but it goes!! and boy does it go....

I thought i would hate the boy racer style lurch over the tank with grips parallel to the knees, but this 40yr old loves it - very surprising, and no aches!!. Could be the last hooray of the midlifecrisis, but when the bonne is up and running again, putting some serious thought into thruxtonising it.
