Bethesda Lab RATs Lunch 8/23

(NOTE: This thread started as "Old School Bonnie at NIH" so see that thread for prior conversations on this topic.)

Hope to see any locals on Thurs for a quick lunch.

NIH employees: Meet on campus, small parking lot alongside the Bldg 13 loading dock (so maybe jdscott74 can pop out and say hi) at noon.

Non-NIH employees: Meet at Hamburger Hamlet, 12:20ish. (since you can't get on campus without a badge)

Directions: Hamburger Hamlet, 10400 Old Georgetown Rd, Bethesda, MD 20814 http://www.hamburgerhamlet.com/index...tbethesda.html On Old Georgetown/Rt 187 in shopping center with DSW, between Rock Spring Dr and Democracy Blvd.

Late Arrivals: Come on into the restaurant and ask for the Lab Rat's table.

Ride Route to Lunch: keeping it short, so probably just exit campus at South St and 187, proceed up 187, left on Democracy, right into shopping center.

Smile I'm in!

I'll be there!

But my bonnie will be dirty as I've ridden 'er every day this week (quite proud of myself for letting go of the 'perfect new clean thruxton fetish' I had going there for awhile.

Can't wait to hear those TORs BonnieLass!

Is the hamberger hamlet on the west side or east side of the road (187?)? If i remember correctly, it's in the bigger mall area, on the west side (right side coming off 495)

You are correct, sir!

Carlos - You got it. It would be on the side closer to DSW, of course. I'll miss you all today - pesky work meetings!! If it's not CRAZY hot on Saturday, however, I'll join the fun. Packs of Bonnies terrorizing the soccer moms, I love it!

mapquest map

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...&zipcode=20814

Hamburger Hamlet is on the West, so a right turn from 187 southbound; if northbound, it's a divided road so you'll need to turn left at either Democracy or Rock Spring and enter the parking lot from there. If you are coming from the west via 270 S (feels East to me!) you take the Rockledge/187 exit, then take the second right onto Old Georgetown, you'll see the shopping center almost immediately on your right.

See you all soon!

3 Thruxtons & 2 Bonnies... (and 1 mystery blue/silver Bonnie that drove past us on 187... ) and 5 different exhausts.

I'll post pics later tonight, including the video with sound clips of all 5 bikes in turn.

Cheers!

Thanks.

Great seeing all those Triumphs!

p.s. we talked about bigger gas tanks, here is one for the Triumph on another thread:

http://www.triumphrat.net/club-cafe/65676-thruxton.html

Thanks a bunch for the muffler compare - that was great.

Now, I just have to research how to do the 1 inch lowering mod....

(if it's low enough... I can get a bonnie for the misses!)

p.s. Ride Safer:
There is a track day coming up at Summit Point,
http://www.teampromotion.com/tpm.php?page_id=art
... will I be the only Bonnie/Thruxton there???

i've been thinking about a track day.
what are their reqts for bike prep & for riding gear if you are a beginner?
how well do you keep up on the straights? i read on a nesba forum that
even beginners get up to 140 on the big course at summit pt.

Not too much; I took my Thruxton down, stock, and the only thing I had to do was use the blue painters tape to tape over the headlight, turn signals, brake lights, and reflectors. And remove the bar end mirrors! (i think you can leave them on but tape over them?)

The riding gear I just rented from them at the track - the reqs are on the web site, but basically one piece leather suit or two piece if it zips all the way around, and back protector (you can rent them separately). Full leather gloves, good boots, helmet. I felt better in their tank armor anyway ;-)

I was on the Jefferson Circuit at summit last time, so I only hit 100 in the straight - but to tell you the truth i'd slow down in the straights to let the speed demons pass me (since most weren't allowed to pass on the corners and I didn't want them tailgating me & distracting me in the twisties!!)

It's all about the corners, learning how much you can trust your bike (for me, a new much heavier bike!) to lean lean lean. I must say I believe I am safer on the road now because I know the bike much much better, if I need to suddenly swerve I won't panic I hope.

Besides, if you are going to really learn your bike, do it at a place that has perfectly clean asphalt, NO CARS, no deer, perfect visibility (no blind corners), huge areas of soft grass on the sides of the track and two fully stocked ambulances idling nearby. It's awesome - no worries but YOU and YOUR BIKE! Plus, you are going around the same twisties every time over and over so you can really work on your form etc... really helps you hone in on your "trouble spots" (which was pretty much everything for me)

After all that... turns out I can't go sept 1 & 2 as my SO is out of town so I'll be mr. responsible all weekend.
