Accelerate hard from about 5000rpm with the throttle wide open and then ease off the throttle slightly. If the bike momentarily pulls harder before slowing then that is a sign that you're lean and your main jets are too small. The descriptions I have seen of rich running are not as clear cut, but if the bike pulls harder when cold than when it has thoroughly warmed up, you could be running rich. But then I don't thrash my bike as a matter of principle until it has warmed up, so I wouldn't be able to tell!

If you open the throttle all the way and the engine surges then picks up revs your mains are too big,if your bike revs straight out then surges your mains are too small,if it rolls on cleanly and revs right out then your pretty close to spot on.Just make sure your on a empty road when you try.

I believe I answered your question. if you are looking for someone to justify your not doing anything, then dont. the bike will be fine.
if you want it to run better, then rejet.

i don't mean to hijack the thread, but what exactly do you mean by surge? is the surge caused by too little or too much gas coming through the jet and then mixing with the air?

Not really. In the original post there is a line in bold. That, and the sentence that followed it constituted my question.

Yes, I'm a lazy slob and I'd rather not screw with the carbs. But my question was if anyone had slipped these mufflers on and neglected to change the jets. And if so... what happened.

There has been alot of great information posted about good results achieved by rejetting. I know it sounds like I'm picking nits here, but that wasn't exactly my question.

and I answered, it will run ok. but better if you re-jet. I know this because I ran my tors with no rejet for a week or 2.
now go do what you want to

Great! You left that part out.

Actually, What I suspect I'll do is to buy the muffler kit (using the discount they offer when buying the bike), and break it in with the stock exhaust in place. Quietly puttering around for the first few weeks may change my mind (and enthusiasm) about rolling around on the 107 degree garage floor.

hmm, I would look into it, as it may be different now, but when I got mine the offer was 500 bucks worth of stuff, and if you got mechanical parts installation was free. It wouldnt hurt it any to break in with tors on
