Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on my problem, I left my bike for a week and had a hard time starting her up today and thought it was the clutch switch that is probably dirty. Anyway, she started up after a couple mins of wiggling the switch and all was well until 30mins into my ride all my lights (brake, headlight, indicators) failed but engine, idling and neutral light was fine.

When I got to my girlfriend's place and switched her off to check the light connections and fuses nothing seemed to be out of place or blown. Tried to start her up again and I got a click but no turn over (idiot oil and neutral still on). I proceeded to check the battery terminals which were all fine, gave the battery a quick charge to see if it was low but still nothing. I'm charging the battery overnight tonight to see if it will cure this but I'm not optimistic as the first time I managed to turn her over it seemed strong and not the anaemic start that I've normally experience with dying batteries? Is there anything obvious I'm missing or should check?

Many thanks in advance,
Martin

I am aware that you checked the fuses, however sometimes you can't tell the fuse is blown visually. It sounds like you have blown fuse#9. This fuse controls all the circuits you have mentioned (via fuses 7, 8 and 10) and the engine will not run without it.

I do quite a lot of electrical work on my bike and therefore blow a lot of fuses when hot testing, so I've replaced all the fuses in the fuse block with 'glow as they blow' types. If the fuse blows a LED lights up so you can see at a glance. They are available from E-Bay or any motor parts store.

And BTW, before attempting to start the bike, check the starter relay to make sure that it is dry inside. Those relays are not waterproof and the rubber hanger also perishes and breaks, leaving the relay hanging. Water ingress in the starter relay could be the cause of the blown fuse. The relay is under the right hand side panel, it is the left most one of the three.

Thanks Ripper, I did replace the fuse 9 with the spare 10amp supplied in the fuse box to check weather the lights would come back on with no luck unfortunately. Let me get a few of the ones you have there as they are good for the long run anyway. I'll look into the starter relay as well and hopefully it could be that.

Cheers!
