Unhappy Engine noise worries !

Hello experts!

I have recently noticed increased engine noise from my 2005 T100 . Bottom end kind of "knocking" /rattling under load especially at low revs, like been in too low a gear and more cam chain type of noise also.

The bike hasn't quite done 4000 miles yet,but I recently changed the oil and this seems to be the cause;

I used Halfords semi synth. 10w40 motorcycle oil and a K&N filter ,but looking back at the service record the last oil change (at 1500 miles) used MOBIL RACING 1 FULLY SYNTHETIC.
I didn't think the bike needed this, but I'm now worried that I have damaged it ! I've only done 20 miles and will drop this oil before I ride again.

Has anyone else had this type of problem ?
Could I also have a balance problem, because 1 exhaust seems louder than the other on my NH Togas ?
thanks

that is very strange, but I doubt it's related to the quality of the oil. how much oil did you put in? What's the level in the sight glass when the bike is upright?

could it be the camchain tensioner? Only 4,000 miles (sweet years to come) but the **** things nothing but a piece of rubber and when it wears or tears you get a sound like the one you mentioned. Just my $0.02. Far better wrenchers inhabit this site than me. -B

This does sound familiar. I doubt the oil caused it though. Probably just a coincidence. You're not noticing a vibration though are you??

My bike is at the dealer right now, AGAIN, trying to figure out a problem that seems to be coming from the bottom end. This bike has always been louder than my last Bonnie, but at first it just seemed to sound like more valve noise than I was used to. I also noticed some rattling/banging noise that sounded like detonation at lower rpms like you described. Slowly the noise got louder and then a definite vibration started and quickly got to the point that the bike is practically unrideable. After about 20 min my hands are numb and cramping. My bike is at around 11500 Km (about 7200 miles)
I'm still waiting to hear from the dealer on what they find.

Hopefully this isn't what your experiencing because it is very frustrating.
I'll post my results whenever I get it sorted out. (not confident that will be anytime soon though......)
D'oh!!!

I think the oil must be a factor. Lke you say it's too much of a coincidence.
I'm not sure if the vibration is any worse. I always found it increasing through the bars over 70mph.

Anyway I'm not going to use it until I've got different oil in.

Big Rick - I hope you get to the bottom of your problem and please let us know the outcome.I thought these bikes were bulletproof and built to Japanese standards nowadays, but reading here, opinions vary !

Can carb balancing /idle jet problems cause vibration and engine "rattles" ?

Type of Oil

SC UK I changed my oil this weekend, checked out different oils from Halfords and decided it wasn't worth the risk, so used Castrol Racing 1 fully synthetic and jobs a good un. Out of curiosity is the jetting right with you fitting a K&N?

Hello skyblue,

I meant a k&n oil filter. My air box is standard and I have 114 mains as supplied by NH.

I drained oil and put Castrol racing1 in today as no one stocked mobil 1 and it seems better. I think the bit of roughness below approx 2200rpm is causing the rattles is down to carb set up .(?)
