The amount of goo is incredible

I'm replacing the chain and sprockets on the T100 this afternoon. First step ... clean out the accumulated chain lube from the sprocket cover and from behind the countershaft sprocket. Bike should be five mph faster just losing the weight!

This is the first chain/sprocket replacement on the T100. I don't feel too badly, the first set made it to nearly 21,000 miles. But due to some strange vibes that can't be attributed to anything else, it's time to do the final drive. The small shop where I purchased the chain and sprockets once again spin balanced the wheel, and found nothing out of balance. Also, the wheel spins true .... no axial or radial run out. I plan to ck the swing arm for smooth movement and any side play while I have the back wheel removed.

For such a simple job as chain replacement, I'm always nervous until I have both pins in the master link correctly rivited in place. Maybe that's a good thing, because it makes me take my time doing chains. There's too much riding on doing it right.

I'm looking forward to a Bonnie that is considerably smoother than she has been. New chain and sprockets .....can't hurt!

BTW - has anyone read where one of the bike mfgs has located the countershaft sprocket on the same pivit point as the swingarm pivits? I think it's BMW, on one of their new F800 belt drive bikes, but it makes a lot of sense. That'd be cool on a chain drive bike, since it'd eliminate a lot of the issues over how tight/how loose the chain should be.

Spondon engineering here in the UK used to make one off frames that did just that back in the 70's & 80's when Jap bikes were fast but pants at cornering.

Bob: You actually CLEAN behind there?

Now that you have how to do it down pat; come on down to Newcomerstown. I'll make you a pot of coffee and bake you a cake while you do mine.

Monte

PS: Don: you are right! You couldn't even PAY me to look behind that cover!!!

Monte - I didn't remove the cover to clean it .... I removed it to change the countershaft sprocket. However, I couldn't stand replacing it packed with, for lack of a better description, goo. Like fresh asphalt. Gummy stuff.

If I ever get serious about working on these things in my garage, I'm buying a parts cleaner. I couldn't believe how nice my BMW tranny looked when I picked it up from the shop after a rebuild. Like new.

Finished the new chain and sprocket installation this morning. I have to say the rear axle adjusters are a bit on the cheesy side, and make replacing the rear wheel a real nuisance. The engineer that designed these things should be condemned to removing and replacing the rear wheel at least once a month for the next year.

I cannot believe how quiet the chain is now when I give the wheel a good spin. Whoooosh!

Now all I need to do is take her for a spin. Hopefully, all the vibes coming from the rear end of the bike will have gone bye bye.
