Purple is Hot This Season
The purple wire at the accessory socket is hot. All blacks are common ground (others, pipe in if there is an exception to this, but I'm not aware of one).

Any 12v bulb (turn signal etc) makes a good test lite for power, with a wire and a alligator clip taped to it

Most of the time the black wires are ground (or earth to the guys across the pond). One exception that I know of is the wires to the alarm connector--they are all black, and some connect to colored wires. There are probably other "exceptions" that I haven't seen.
I recommend checking, always. If you don't have the proper instruments, use something like Geoff says--they work.

The purple is the hot and goes to Fuse number 3
The black ground attaches to the tail light ground.

There are a lot of great suggestions here but the best way is to turn the bike on and touch each wire to your tongue; you'll surely know which one is power using this method!

I was messing with a lamp the other day, the bulb wouldn't fit under the shade, so I thought "if I take the shade off and pull this out for some slack I can .....*********ZZZZAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPP**************** *"
Shocked the bejesus out of me! well, it's only 110 so I can't really complain....I know some electricians that would say that's child's play, but as my grandfather says "it didn't take me long to hold it"

Me either - there is something quite funny about surprise electrocutions! When I was around 5-6 years old i was walking by a neighbors house and some teenager was in the garage pulling the starter cord on the B&S lawn mower but it wouldn't start. I asked the kid, "What are you doing?" he said, "Trying to get this lawn mower started!" I said, "Do you need some help?" He said, "Sure - I want you to put your finger on the top of this plug here and tell me if you feel anything move." I did that while he pulled the cord and he resolved his problem of the pesky kid with silly questions immediately!
