If this is NEW behavior then look for a hanging up throttle wires, etc. When did you last check and lube your cables?
Are you one of those who likes a real low idle? Bad news in situations like you describe. Get the idle up well above 1000. You have a tach so settle it about 1200+ when you are doing vigorous riding, especially if you are doing a lot of down shifting and depending on engine braking.
And I strongly agree about people often being in too high a gear for the situation. I've ridden tight twisties around the hills I live in with a lot of guys who ride in 5th gear and 4th gear going around corners at 20 and 30 mph! AND they let off the throttle as they coast around, and then wonder why their throttle action is "abrupt" when they turn it back up! Keep the revs above 3500, regardless of mph, and, if you want even semi-serious performance, above 4000.
And, I agree that more info would be helpful. Other than that I disagree with everything he posted!
