Choke Question

I'm buying a used bonneville and the guy selling says he doesn't bother using the choke unless it's really cold outside.

Is that normal? Do others out there regularly not use the choke when starting the bike?

I don't know anyone who can start their bonnie without the choke, but that may not mean much. There's no denying that these bikes are cold beasts (even in the summer).

No

I wouldn't think that's normal in Canada. If the bike always starts easily without using the choke, it may be one indicator that the bike is running somewhat rich.

definitely not a problem worth worrying about, if it requires mixture adjustment it's a simple procedure and takes only seconds.

starting cold(ha) in Arkansas summer

I can start my bike w/o the choke in Arkansas during the summer. It sputters a bit and granted it is easier to start with the choke---but it can be done.

ok - so it sounds like this is nothing to worry about, albeit a bit strange.

I couldn't understand how the bike would start without the choke being out and worried that by starting the bike without using the choke could create a problem in the long run.

Now you've got me thinking

Hi,In the late 70'-early 80's I had a '77 Bonneville 750 with the Amal carbs and most of the time just pushed those bowl flooding buttons. I used the choke in winter.
My wonderful wife surprized me with an '05 Bonneville T100 w/ 2000 miles on it for my birthday two weeks ago.
So granted this is Missouri and it's been kinda hot outside (85-95f) but I haven't used the choke yet. I can start it and drive away in 2-3 seconds every time with no hesitation at all. I figured I'd need to use the choke in the cooler days of the fall but after reading all of your posts I'm wondering if I should check the color of the plugs to see if she ain't running rich.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I purchased my '07 Bonnie in January, and of course, used the choke throughout the cold season.

However, this summer, IF the temp is above 70 F I start and run the Bonnie w/o any problem. Takes only a minute or so, as I ride down my alley to the main drag for her to totally smooth.

ride on
