My question also! Will be interested in the replys as I'm ready to sync them instead of the dealer.

I have a tach, but I don't really find it completely necessary when doing a carb synch. Just warm the bike up to normal operating temp and then turn the idle speed screw to keep slowing the idle until it sounds like it's going as slow as it possibly can without dying - so it sounds like a tractor (this will be about 500 rpm). Then see if the carbs are synched up. Once you get them adjusted, turn the scew in one more turn to raise the idle (should be about 1500 rpm at this point) and see if they are still synched up. Adjust and turn the scew another half turn and repeat. Reset your idle where you like it and you're done.

You don't use the tach, you use a vacuum gauge or manometer attached to the vacuum ports on the carbs. You can buy a couple of vacuum gauges for about $25 and some plastic tubing.Mount them on a piece of wood, and clamp the tubing to dampen down the pulses, then set idle around 2000RPM and adjust synch screw until both readings are the same. Reset idle, then connect the two vacuum ports with a piece of the tubing and you should stay in synch for ever, or until you adjust the valves.I can e-mail you a PM with pics if you want.
If you want a nice little tach thats easy to instal, get a harley minitach from pwersports outlet store for $50, item # 300022590792.

I've read instructions for synching the carbs that call for upping the idle to 1200 rpm, synching, then bringing the idle back down to 1000. But I have always just done it with a fully warmed up bike at normal idle. Like stu said, you depend on a good manometer (either mercury carb sticks or something like the CarbTune, which I use), and the tach is quite secondary.

the taco is not realy needed in carb synching as the guys have said ,the main thing is vacuum guages, and i usualy check adjust right through the rev range, all u need for that is your ears, if u know what your doing when tuning your bike your listening to your engine, reading your guages and doing proper plug chops ,i peronaly dont use oversized jets a full set of jet drills going up one size at a time (this method is not for everyone) ,when u know what your doing combined with all you have read on the posts here u can acheive a good result . and on the older bikes high rpm pilot settings can be usefull ect..
