Carb Rant

Sorry all, just got very frusterated with the carb screws. It just took me about 2 hours for what should have been a 30 minute job. I striped two bolts when tring to rejet the carbs. I do not understand why they used such a soft metal. If it has a purpose... then fix whatever its purpose is too! For what was a $1.68 fix to have better screws, why not just come with them. Does anybody know the reasoning for that?

The theory behind the soft screws is to save you from an even greater problem if you strip a thread in the soft carb bodies. There are a PITA though - get stainless socket head replacements and use care when tightening.

carb screws

I use the socket head allen screws also, it is a lot easier to hold them on a allen wrench when putting them back in also.

I used the screws with the allen key as well... much nicer. Just very frustrating when you under there and all that is left is rounded knob . I tell you, I wanted to hunt down the designer just to drop-kick him . But finally got it off after using a dremal and cutting a grove to get some grip on it.

I was waiting for someone to chime in on that! I read about it in one of the moto mags.

Question Carbs

Noone responded to my post about Flat Keighns? I was trying to find out the advantages to them & wether worth changing over? I remember the ole "philips screws" holding the ole Honda together. They stripped off 1st try. We had to buy a small impact wrwench that did the job or replace them w/ allen. I still have the wrench. As said I would get new screws & be careful!! Its funny- some things havent changed in 30+ years. I guess maybe on some bikes??

You might consider longer screws for the two that hold the idle adjust bracket or not using the lock washers on these two screws. The ones in the kits are too short for this application with the lock washers, IMHO.
