Stripped threads

Whilst over-tightening my stainless carb screws, I stripped the threads on my carb. What's the best fix? It's the one on the outside that the idle adjuster is connected to.
Thanks

retap the hole...then use thread lock blue should suffice. I doubt they make helicoils that small. If its totaly screwed up epoxy the hole and rethread

That's even worse then snapping the head off the bolt! Sorry to hear this, I like Andy's Idea.

I believe I would tap it for the next larger size--probably an SAE size just a tad larger. If you need to drill the hole, make a short handle for a drill bit and drill it by hand--a ball of tape will even work for a handle--it just has to be large enough to hold the bit and turn the bit easily...you are drilling only a few thousands off an existing hole in pot metal.

I have advised many times on this forum to NOT use the lock washers on the two screws that hold the idle adjust bracket if you use the SS screw kit...those two screws are too short with the lock washer on them.

If you were using the lock washer, you probably only stripped out 1/2 the threads, because the screw only goes about 1/2 way into the threads. I would still drill and tap for the next larger size and buy that size SS allen head screw a little longer than needed and cut to proper length. Then I would paint it black to jog my old memory that it goes only ONE place on the left carb.

If you go to the next size screw you will probably have to open up the cover as well. If I remember correctly there isnt a whole lot meat on the cover. If you screw it up...fixing it will be PIA. I would go larger only as a last resort

I did the same thing with that same screw.

Do what I did: go to the hardware store and find another screw that's slightly longer than the one you've got. You only stripped out about half the threads -- if you insert a longer screw and are careful not to overtighten, it'll hold just fine.

Thanks to all who attended!

Do you keep one bullet left for yourself, for when it's all over and done?

that is the one drawback of the ss bolts. I like Larrys way of doing it, if there are not enough threads left for a longer fastener

stripped threads

A long time ago, I had a stripped thread on a carb for a datsun, found some stuff from loctite that worked, has some release to put on the screw, and some epoxy like stuff for the hole, when the stuff setup, it worked as well as the old threads before striping.

Thanks guys. I took off the washer and that gave enough threads to grab. I'll fix it properly next time I have the carbs apart.
