Steering Head Adjust/Lubricate Required Service

Owner's manual for 2006 Speedmaster says to check/adjust lubricate headstock bearing at 6000 mile service. Haynes service manual says 12000 miles, twice the amount. Looks like a lot of work, probably a lot of labor cost, which I suspect may be the reason for the difference. Any experience, thoughts on this job -- getting it done at 6K or postponing to 12K? I don't have any problems with steering. Thanks for any input.

Use the book to check it out, for play, too tight, etc. If its good, leave it alone, if not dive in

Talking Steering bearings.

I did the steering bearings at about 13,000 miles.Tore it down completely.Repacked bearings in synthetic grease.Yes it is a lot of work.Got 33,000 miles now on her.Going to do it again soon.Just because.I am going to change the fork oil also, repack the bearings and maybe install fork gaters for looks. No fun to do,but I can not afford to have it done.Good luck if you do it.
