Backfire by carbs when cold

I have installed NARK + D&D pipes with AI removal. I am using 145 mains with 40 jets 2 1/2 turns out. Everything seems to be running as well as it did before I started changing things. I haven't done a dyno with EGA yet but I have one planned in the next couple weeks.

I am noticing occasional backfire noises by the carbs when the bike is still warming up. I read somewhere that it is normal but does anyone else have this problem? Is it a sign of badness? How do you know if you are getting 'detonation'?

Thanks a ton. I'll give it a shot. Do you think I should go to 42 pilots or just try the 3 turns on the 40's?

Donkeypunch...I have a similar setup with NARK, Thrux needles and Sprint pipes on my "02". I wound-up with 42's for the pilots (40's caused too much popping in my case), 3-turns out and 135 for the Mains and drilled slide. My last Dyno Run showed Max 58 HP and 47 Ft lbs at the wheel with this configuration. It still backfires sometimes when cold on start-up, but I believe that might be a function of the British Customs Igniter with the 3 degree advance.

I would not use the 42's on a 865-they make it too rich. I think they do work on 790 motors.
Mine is at 3.25 turns and its perfect

Well I went to 3 turns out with stock 40 pilots. It seems to backfire less but it still does it. It happens especially when the bike is cold and I am in first or second gear running along at low RPM's. It happens when I back off the throttle just a little but not all the way. It is weird because its not really a backfire it is like a puff up by the engine. When it puffs the bike hesitates a little bit during the puff.

Also I get a lot of cackling when I let off the throttle from high RPM without putting the clutch in. It isn't really backfire noise, just like a gurgling from the pipes. Is that bad?

PS - I have the 790 engine.

I fixed part of the problem. I finally found GaryD's instructions for removing the evaporative loss crap from California. It seems to be running a lot better. I still get a rare carb backfire but it is at idle now, not when the bike is in gear at low RPM's. I think it is time for a dyno + EGA.
