Rev limiter?

Is it possible to over-rev a bonne? What would happen if you do over-rev an 07?

I've got to get a tach on my Bonne Black....I have about 1500 miles on her (AI removed, Airbox removed, rejetted and TORs) It seems like the higher the revs the better in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. She just seems to run better and better the more miles I put on her.

Anyway...rev limits?

Anything is possible, but I think Triumph hedged its bets with the "lower than it needs to be" limiter.I wouldn`t do it on every shift, but once in a while won`t hurt it at all.

The conventional wisdom (on this web site) suggests that stock rev limiter will prevent damage, cutting out the motor at about 7500 rpm. You can buy aftermarket limiters with a higher rev limit, and it seems the bonnie motors can tolerate spinning at 8000 rpm and above without damage. That said, I wouldn't worry about hitting the rev limit on occasion, but I still highly recommend getting a tach. I had a tach installed on my bike before it left the showroom, and it's so nice to be able to glance down and know your engine speed. It is especially helpful since the motor is so smooth and relatively quiet.

There was a thread at some point in which someone calculated the maximum piston speed for the Bonneville and it worked out to something near 9000 rpms (I'm working off of memory here, so please don't quote me). Many have stated that 8200 is no sweat. I routinely hit the stock limiter as my bike really feels like it is just hitting it's sweet spot at 7300 (and things really start to happen fast over 6000). If the price were not so dear, I would already have purchased an aftermarket ignition module to raise my rev-limit threshold. I would not worry about hitting the stock limiter at all, as it is a conservative countermeasure to over-revving.

It does depend on how long you want the engine to last, of course hitting the limiter wont blow it up, but it will sure wear out quicker if it is done all the time.

Hi, running mine on the Dyno with what I believe to be a stock rev limiter, I say believe as the bike had one previous owner but he didn't mention fitting a higher rev limiter, anyway on the dyno mine has hit 8400RPM before the limiter cut in and on the road I can get well over 8,000 showing on the tach before the limiter cuts in, on the Dyno though power is starting to trail off at 8250 or thereabouts

The tacho is the first accessory I added. Get yourself one of D9's lay-flat brackets and install it while you're doing the tacho, it greatly improves the appearance. (If he still has any.)

Don't worry about it. I hit the rev limiter almost every shift for 2,500 miles of roadracing and track days last year, and when I tore the engine down to return it to street trim, no wear or damage was noted. Truly a tough, well designed engine.
