After putting up with horrible gas mileage (consistently 29 mpg) and mediocre performance for a couple months, I decided to take drastic corrective action this weekend.

I removed both the AI system and the Evaporative Emissions Control system (temporarily, and for diagnostic purposes only, I assure you :-D ) and plugged up all the holes.

All of a sudden the bike sounded right, pulled the way it should, and best of all, after 300 miles and a couple fill ups, I'm getting over 39mpg. Instead of hitting reserve at 90-95 like before, I didn't have to switch over til 134 miles this last tank.

Thats with my riding like a fool, hitting the TON on the fwy a couple times, sustained cruising at 90, a run through Brea Canyon Blvd. I can't help it, she's running so good now she's just begging for it.

Still don't know exactly what the problem was, but it was somewhere in all those extra hoses and gadgets.

Glad to hear you sorted out the problems on your bike! From what you've described, I'd guess that in removing the AI and evap systems, you probably fixed a minor vaccuum leak that was causing all your problems. Personally, I wouldn't replace either of those systems, and just keep enjoying the good running ride!

Sounds ready to run Turnbull Canyon/Beverly now.

I wasn't getting more than 100 miles per tank for the first few tanks, and then she loosened up and has been getting closer to 120.
