I'm looking for a partner for my '07 T100 ( so I can get the bl**dy thing off the wife !
I may have found the right bike, low miles, 2001, 100% standard spec, supposedly immaculate, which allows me to develop it, if I/we choose. Apart from the the smaller engine....any 'generic' issues / gremlins ( or positives) I should be looking out for. Cases have been polished, so no lacquer issues.....it'll go quick, so I need to be decisive. Any spec changes that will be a problem ?
cheers....

The 2001 is the same basic bike as the 2007. Only changes they made over the years (aside from bumping up the displacement) are cosmetic.
My 2001 has been fantastic. I got it in the fall of 2004 with a little over 3000 miles on it, and by fall of this year I'll have around 20,000 miles on it. I've had no problems with it -- and I definitely don't baby it.
Buy with confidence.

There is only one problem I know of that affected most 2001's--there is a service bulletin to replace a part inside the left left engine cover to stop oil from passing through the vent/breather tube to the airbox. A simple/easy fix that may have already been (should have been done) by the servicing dealer.
The cam timing is different on the 790, and it responds to mods VERY well. Some (I for one) prefer the 790 over the 865. If the price is right, BUY! :-D

I'd take the 790 over the 865...The two local shops here suggest the 790 over the 865 if your planning on performance mods later down the road...The 790 responds better to the mods...or as they like to say..."We can usually squeeze a little more out of the 790 over the 865..."
Right price? Good Shape? 790...? I'd take it...

Wasn't there also some talk of clutch chatter on some 01's?
Also, some 01's came with very lean jets, 105?
I believe both should be taken care of already if properly serviced...

The clutch chatter issue. Remedied with a new clutch center.

Clutch chatter is a problem on some 2001 bikes, mainly those from the first half of the year. It's an irritating problem but doesn't cause any issues from the point of view of wear on the engine, safety or rideability.
There was a service bulletin issued to replace the clutch basket, but some bikes (including mine) have the problem but weren't covered. It seems that if the bulletin doesn't cover your bike, Triumph won't replace the part (at least that's my dealer's story). Someone on this forum (can't remember who - my apologies) suggested beefed up clutch springs are the remedy. I've just had some fitted, but haven't had a chance to ride it to find out if it really sorts it out.
Apart from that, there are no real problems. You'll find the West Country climate will give you plenty of practice at polishing out rust spots on the wheel rims, mirror stalks, and anything else chromed, and riding in the rain will eventually have the same effect on some of the plating on parts of the engine covers. But I've found mine to be virtually bullet proof. It even took a hit from a stolen van whose driver was trying to make a quick getaway through me, and it didn't suffering unduly.
