hi guys, this is just a part two of my previous topic since the title was a little unclear. maybe it will help with topic traffic.

i did make a little progress on the problem. i found that the run/stop switch will indeed kill the motor when moved to the off position, but the starter will continue to turn until the key is moved to off. move the run/stop switch to run and it fires up, but the starter still turns).

i checked and blew out almost every electrical plug and found no water. took the handlebar switch housings apart and found no water. checked the fuses, all fine. checked the harness/plugs in the headlight shell, dry as a bone.

i am completely stumped, unless the bot of water that got on the solenoid has caused the problem.

Start button - starter relay - starter solenoid - starter motor.
Either way i think your going to need a meter to check for power and/or continuity.

My guess is that something is sticking.
You could start disconnecting wires in the start control circuit untill it stops turning over.

try a little dielectric grease at the solenoid connections.

plan on double checking the starter and solenoid tomorrow.

not too experienced with the use of the multimeter, any tips?

also, i can't seem to locate the starter relay. is it past the solenoid? is it under the tank?

and finally, what will dilectric grease accomplish on a possibly sticking solenoid?

thanks for the help so far guys!

Pull the starter relay, it's number 11 below I think it has 4 or 5 wires going to it.. The other relay is for the turn signals..
When you pull the relay off the harness see if there is any water in it, if not give it a whack to see if the contact points come unstuck... The relays are under the left side cover.

This problem is not hard to trouble-shoot, but the fact that your asking forum members kind of indicates you are over your head. I do not mean that as an insult, and asking forum members is not a bad idea. However; if you can't use a multimeter well and don't understand the electrical system, take it to a mechanic that does ... and hopefully he or she will let you watch, listen and learn. It will be worth your money. It sounds like less than one hour labor, and maybe a switch, relay or connector - IMO it would be an hour labor spent well. Sounds like you have already done the easy stuff, just don't start tearing you bike apart for a problem that a mechanic could easily and quickly fix.

Shalom, Marc

Hooligan, I had the exact same experience last summer. It was the starter relay.

Pull the relay, take it to an auto parts store. There's a universal replacement. Ask for a relay made by GP Sorensen, part number MR78. (Also fits a ford ranger?)

Here's a thread: clicky

Just guessing - sounds like a shorted or broken start switch. There is a little spring that holds the contacts open in the start switch of many bikes, could be broke. Let us know what you find out. Just curious
