I was at the Pomona (Los Angleles area) Roadster show on Father's Day, where the recent trend towards "Rat Rods" instead of hot rods was very prevalent. Many, as in hundreds, of roadsters were what appeared to be raw steel, but were actually clear coated with varying degrees of sheen clear. Since so many of these guys are now spending big, big bucks to make their roadsters appear like raw metal, I'd do a little internet search on rat rods and see what these guys can tell you about clear coating plain steel.
