I am not too sure Erwin ... i'll have to check, but I think it is the single.

I'll take another peek at Pat's jet calculator, but I seemed close last time. And apart from a little leanness through the mid range (3-4.5K), the dyno run showed me as being pretty good.

I am going to read up on all this carb stuff again at the weekend and see if I can't make sense of all these settings and how they come together.

If its the single youre definetly close but slill a little lean. I would recomend at least 1 if not 2 shims with your current set up. Its very easy to do. Really.
You can find simple step by step instructions on
Pats site

Erwin ...

A TBS needle (or 1 or 2 shims to the stock needle) would put me on a 130.5 mains ... spot on where I am now. So that confirms that I am on the lean side - accentuated in the mid-range.

However, my current hot start problem feels like it's choking up at idle/tickover and I need to understand what impact the mixture screws have throughout the rev-range. If I turn back a half or three quarter turns now, am I just leaning everything out higher in the range too? And if so, should I be swapping back to the 40 pilots and leaving the mixture put?

try the simple first. when the motors hot, pull the choke half way and see how it starts. And what is your idle set to when hot. I would tend to think that your idle circuit might be a bit rich at 3 3/4 turns. A 1/2 turn in on each might help and thats also simple to do.
Draw back is it might give you some popping on decel.

When I was having trouble starting the bike the other day Erwin, from cold (but ambient temp at 80F+) , it was really struggling to hold the idle. As soon as I touched the choke ... like 1/8" to 1/4" - it cut the engine immediately.

I read that as choking-up.

Since all the work was done last year, including the 42 pilots - she hasn't needed much choke in the cold - and very little if any as the season warms up.

So I am guessing that the extra turns on the mix have just pushed her into "rich at idle" in the warm ... sound feasible?

yes definetly! Those mixture screws need to be turned in. Sounds like we have come to an educated conclusion. Do you have a "D" tool?

Busy, busy, busy ...

Sorry for the delay in responding Erwin ...

... and no, I don't have the magic "D" tool

Time to get one, or get the replacement mix screws from NewSpeedmaster.com

I figured the tool was cheaper and easier to deal with. Just stick it in and start scewing in or out. :-D
