I'm really good about checking pressure on my bikes. The only one that looses pressure is my Bonnie. In fact, I'm adding a lot. Tires and tubes are new. Is this normal?

It's worse than your (split-rim) Stella and VBB? No, that's not normal. Any time you have a tube in there, you'll lose more air than you will with tubeless rims, but I've found my Bonnie to be much closer to air-tight than my Stella (although my Stella's tubeless rims and tires arrived in the mail today!). I have to put a pound or two in the rear tire every couple weeks, but that's it.

We've had a number of threads on the topic of losing tire pressure. The consensus seems to be that some loss of pressure is just a fact of life, but that the main culprit of inordinate air loss is loose or poorly fitted air valves.

This may be overly elementary, but just in case: Check the valves first. Tighten them down nice and snug, and re-check them by applying some soapy water to the end. If you are still losing pressure through the stem, install new valves. You may have to try a few before you get one that fits well.

Good luck!

I'm glad to see that people are checking their tire pressure. I have a cracked rib and a box of broken parts because I skipped checking my tire pressure for just one day.

I recently lost control and high-sided off my bike after going around a tight corner at no more than 25 mph. Even before I hit the pavement, I was trying to figure out what the hell I did (or didn't do) that I hadn't done at that corner dozens of times before. By the time I got the bike home, and myself out of the hospital, I had narrowed my instant re-playing to the moment just before I lost control. I remember feeling like the back wheel was made of Jell-o. Turns out that there wasn't enough pressure in the tire to keep the sidewall rigid; the tire just folded away from the rim around the corner, which threw my steering into "what-the-hell" mode. A couple of tank slaps is all it took to bring it (and me) down.

The valve stem was leaking, but I can't use that as an excuse. I filled the tire back up to see how bad it was leaking and it took over a day to deflate. The REAL cause of the accident was me being lax and over-confident. Now I check it every day. Funny thing is, I religiously lube and adjust my chain, check fluid levels, inspect, tug and wiggle. But for some reason I didn't think it was important enough to check my tire pressure. :???:

I lose almost the same as Captain D 8-10 lbs per month.
Its the nature of the beast with tube type tires.

I treat the bike just like my SCUBA gear. Full check before every use. Both are life support sports IMO.

I lose as much at Captdon too. I check them weekly or before I go for a ride if it's been longer than a week.
