Brent, you list the Hydes as a 7. Is that with or without the removeable baffles in place?
|
There's really not a heck of a lot of difference between baffled and unbaffled. I'd say the unbaffled Hydes are 7.5 while baffled is 7.

Cheap Bastard
After spending a bunch of time today looking through the site for a set of mufflers with good tone, looks, and not too bloody loud for my musician fried ears, I got out my trusty 3/4" hole saw and took the bafflectomy to the next level. Just one hole in each rear baffle deepened the tone considerably and added just the right amount of volume. Try it, if it's not loud enough, you can always add more holes!

Staintunes may indeed only be a 4 out of a possible 10 on the loudness scale, but it's a beautiful 4 that would rate at least twice that on a tone scale.

Absolutely right! Tone is even more subjective than volume. For instance, I wouldn't trade my D&D's for anything else. To some, the tone isn't desirable. To me, it's music

Don't hold me to it but that's my opinion right now. BTW, I run D&D's on my bike (and have done so since early 2003) and wouldn't change them for any other pipe available for these bikes at the moment.

Me too-your rating is spot on-my D&D pipes are repacked with some German stuff that really gives them a nice, deeper but still loud sound!

I was going to say 12, but I'll go with 11.
Bert, you and I will drown out poor SHRuuM.

Sound, like color, is completely subjective. Everyone sees or hears or interprets that input differently. I know there are plenty of religiously loyal Staintune guys. When I heard them on the Bonnie I liked their loud but not too loud feature. Yet, prersonally, I found them to be more, "...blap, blap, blap..." than I wanted. The Touring Dominators I have now are the "...blump, blump, blump..." I was searching for. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

No mention of Mototwin SS's in your lists, maybe no-one has them.
To take standard pipes as a 1
Tors = 3
Mototwin, Loudness = 6 [Bass = 10]
Headers/Downpipes only =10
It is not only the loudness that makes a great sound, the bass and tone also contributes, old Meriden bonnies were bassy but not that loud. The Mototwins are just right sound for me out of what is available in UK.
