What components (if any) should I expect to begin failing or proactively replace?

Bike had its last major service in 2013 (valve clearances checked, etc) following which I pulled the airbox. It's been running well since.

Should I be leaving good enough alone?

Original battery? if so it's living on borrowed time.
Funny you guys should say this. I replaced the battery last summer only to have it die at one point.

I suspected the regulator-rectifier might be the issue but it hasn't acted up since then. It's something I'm keeping an eye on though.

I was considering replacing the chain as it's probably the original and it'd give me an excuse to change the sprockets at the same time and drop down to a 17T.

My '08 had 26,000 miles on it when I traded it in last October. The only things that I replaced outside of what I felt were upgrades were the brakes, chain/sprockets, regulator/rectifier, battery and tires. Although needed or not, a Mosfet R/R can be considered an upgrade.

Edit: Oh yeah, and intake cam shaft, but that was due to fault of the dealer.

Leave it alone and don't worry about things till they need replacing, it looks like you don't clock up many miles peryear, 25,000ks in 7to8 years are not much in that time, if the battery let you down on the side of the road you can always clutch start it if need to, why waste money when its going OK, I have clocked up over 25,000ks and I have only had the bike since 2013, so don't give it any throughts, just take it out when you want, do the maintenance when needed and enjoy it, well thats my opinion anyway.
