A question regarding RPMs on the Triumph America:
As we know, theTriumph America does not come standard with a tachometer. I may consider installing a tach at some point. I've been riding my new 2006 Triumph America for three months now. It's great and I'm glad to be back in the saddle of a motorcycle after 29 years of driving only the four-wheeled machines. I am curious as to what the approximate RPM range is at around 55, 65, 75 mph, etc.
Just curious. Any information from America owners with tachs, or SM riders would be appreciated.

one thing you can do is find that website (cant remember name...ack) that calculates all that stuff when you plug in your sprocket size, tire size, final gear ratio and it'll tell you that.
Just as a general guide(and mine is not exactly the same as yours) top gear has me at 70 mph at 4000 rpm. you would prbably be within 400 rpm of that number, either way

Not sure this is relevant as I ride a 07 Speedie, which has different, well, everything...gearing/hp/torque/riding position, etc but:
1st gear: 6mph/1000rpm
2nd gear: 10mph/1000rpm
5th gear: 20mph/1000rpm
Thus, 4000revs in top=an indicated 80mph.

Riding my SM at 3500 rpm shows 63 mph.

I have an 07 TBA and had the tacho installed at purchase. It is the same as above. 100ks (60mph) is about 3,450. Stock TBA and SM must have the same ratio.

I'll have to check, but I'm still in 4th gear at 65.
80 MPH in 5th gear is around 5K RPM.

Worth buying a tach for an Triumph America?
I just bought a 2007 America and decided not to add the tachometer, mostly for economic reasons. I haven't even taken delivery (will received Saturday 9/1) and I'm having second thoughts on not adding a tach, wondering it it might have been a good idea. As a newbie I'm thinking I might be interested in knowing my rpm's, especially when on hilly rides where I'd like to better manage compression on hilly downhill riding. The accessories catalogue shows $160. Are these an easy do it yourself installation or best handled by the dealer. I'm on the low end of mechanic/technician skills. If I chose the dealer, anyone out there can tell me what their installation cost was. Thanks.

RPM's for America
First off, get the tach! I added it at delivery to my '06 America and use it a lot. Also, I changed the sprocket - went two up from the stock 16 to 18 (or was it 17 to 19?). This dropped my RPM's at around 65-70 mph from 4000 to 3500. I think I am back to about 4000 when running at 75 mph. With the bigger sprocket, I found I didn't really lose any front end power and it made fifth gear a much better cruising gear without the strain of higher RPM's.

I had a tach on my TBS, so I thought for sure I'd miss not having one on my TBA. Since I spent $9K to get my America out the door, I didn't get the tach. I haven't missed the tach once, so I won't be bying one.
