One of my more lofty mods ( I hope ) is going to be integrating a mini speedometer into the headlight bucket.
I figure the two bigget issues I'm going to deal with are moving the wire looms enough to make room for it as well as making sure I have a water tight fit.
I'm curious as to whether anyone might think I'll have a heat issue generated from the speedometer and headlight that might cause me some problems....

I certainly would appreciate any input the great minds of this site might have!

:-)

I would think the easiest thing to do would be to get a tube that is just larger than the speedo to act as a housing. Find an angle that works so you can see the speedo face and weld the tube to the headlight bucket.

kinda like this old Old Honda Bucket:

only round, not triangular.

I don't think you'll have a problem with heat, but I'll be curious to see how you route the speedo cable thru the housing.

There's a lotta wires inside that thing..

A number of people have proven that you can move wires elsewhere if it's important enough to you. I think that you'll have an easier time with your mini speedo plan than with the fullsize speedo. I suspect the hole will definately have to be toward the back of the bucket though, else the speedo will bump into the light element. You might want to make a small hole in the bottom of the bucket to pass the speedo cable through. Buy one of those rubber grommets from the hardware/auto store to fill the hole. Finally, you can tape some heat shield material around the speedo if you're worried about heat buildup. Good luck. I'll be interested to see how it turns out.

i have been thinking about doing this...if done right it will look bad ass.

Any reason you cant get an early headlight assembly / speedo and mod it to your bike. That seems easier then starting from scratch.

Well i bit the bullet and bought a vintage BMW Airhead Headlight Bucket w/speedo....now comes the fun part.

Anyone know where to get Vintage BMW parts (12v Halogen Headlight Assy)?

Thanks,
Steve
