This weekend a car stopped short about 20 yards in front of me. I hit the brakes pretty hard and the back tire locked up. I must say the Bonnie was well balanced and handled really well, just a small fishtail and a good screech from the tires. I was really pleased.

I scared myself a little the first time I locked up the rear, but the bonnie didn't panic, so neither did I. Scared myself the first time I heard the pegs scrapping too.

I agree, gives you a little pucker factor the first time you lock up the back break. It seems to lock up pretty easy, so I barely use it anymore. but that might have something to do with me being a little "heavy handed" when I operate things.

I had a similar experience about two years back. And yes the bike does balance well in a skid.

I'm not preaching here but a lesson you may wish to take from this experience is that a locked rear tire does not provide the shortest stopping distance.

After I locked up the rear (and it happened more than once), I trained myself to rely on the front brake much more than the rear. I figure this may have saved my life this past weekend when I was doing high 80's behind a merc when he hit the brakes hard after spotting a trooper on the side of the road. If I would have gone to the back brake, I'm sure I'd have rear-ended the merc.

Ride safe out there boys & girls...

I had the rear wheel lock up on me when I missed a stop sign that was hidden by foliage. I saw it at the last minuet and applied the breaks. The rear wheel locked up and did a couple of hops and then I saw that no one was coming from any direction so I just released and cruised through it. I was only doing about 40mph so it wasn't that big of a deal - thank God no one was around!

what you may want to do is practice some hard stops in a empty parking lot, so when you need to do it for real it does not come as a total surprise.
Practice threshold braking , learning where the lock-up point is, and holding it just short of that

allot of the issues comes from the soft front suspension. Upgrading the springs upfront really helps with the weight transfer under braking. I have not locked the rear brake since an upgrade in front springs.

Ikon progressives, they made a huge difference in braking. I also have KYB adjustable rears (ZRX 1200 donors), which helped with weight transfer also, but nothing like the springs.
