bike is running rather sh1tty and i would appreciate some advice guys on what im missing here after a basic crack at diagnosing turned up zac;
SYMTOMS: past 2000km, bike went from feeling a little flat to now being significantly down on power. acceleration about 3/4 normal, labouring to make that power (more throttle / different exhaust note - more of a slapping or farting noise)
Stumbles / misses with a bit of throttle from idle. issue seems to be with the right side cylinder (but thats only a hunch from what i think i can or cant hear??)
CHECKED:
1. the carb balance with the carbtune=perfect
2. Pulled the plugs - good colour, but changed for new.
3. the spark delivery with a new plug = nice blue arc.
3. drained the carbs.
4. tightened everything around the carbs (clamps etc) incl those gumby covers on the oulet nipples
5. Only ever use 98RON fuel from same company (BP)
All these are OK but bike still running like ****e
Am i missing something??? :???:

It's always difficult to diagnose from afar, but....
1.) Could it be the fuel enrichment valve - commonly called the "choke" - is stuck in the full open position. This might result in the symptoms you list.
2.) Air inlet filter clogged up?
3.) Plug wires reversed?
Just some thoughts.

What, if anything did you do right before the problem occurred? Was it in storage? Any modifications? Have you tried getting rid of the gas--even if it's a good company, you can still get some bad gas, and if it's got water in it, it will go to the bottom and cause problems until you get it out. If it was stored, even for a short time, you could have partially gunked up carbs. After I take the bike out of three-month winter storage, with the fuel stabilized, I run two tanks of gas treated with a product called Seafoam to clean the carbs.

thanks for the suggestions.
badrufus: it ran well to 10k klm with staintunes only mod. and has run very strongly till then. its been used in allweather, including pouring rain a few times. after that service i caned it in the hills one day and things have been going down hill so to speak since then.
but i will look at the things suggested and let you know.
thanks again.

Exposing my ignorance here, but what do you mean by "caned it?"
How's the fuel supply? Have you tried rigging up an external tank and feeding fuel from that? It could be a clogged filter on the petcock.

mlc,
Check your battery connections. make sure they are tight and clean.
Since you dumped it, check all your electrics under the side panels and seat.
Also make sure the tank vent isn't partially blocked with some crud.

could it be anything like a bent valve or something...? A compression test would show if its down on compression...

update
mechanic couldnt see the bike today-pouring rain and needs to test ride it
but on the way home the bike cut out like it was running out of petrol and died altogether - had to wait 10mins, and the only way it would start is if i pulled the choke out full and ran it out . it eventually cut out again - wait - choke, and it limped home coughing and spluttering
going to drain the tank + check the other things suggested + put a carb cleaner through the system as mech. suggested it might be the jets sticking / clogged????
late for work now so ill do this arvo
thanks guys

My guess is you have two problems: 1. your vent in the gas cap is not working and 2. when you dropped the bike, the tip over valve stuck in the closed position so you get no venting for the gas tank.
The tip over valve is behind the carbs on the overflow hose from the gas tank. It is supposed to close when the bike tips over. Many seem to have had problems with the gas cap vent on the '06's. Your gas cap vent may have been not functioning for some time and venting through the overflow hose until the tip over valve closed.
Good luck,
Larry
PS: Gob-ny-geay, what difference, if any, would it make on these engines if the plug wires were reversed...think about it for a minute...both cylinders fire at the same time every crank revolution...and the wires come from ONE coil. :-D
