Had a valve adjustment 12K+ yesterday. All the valves were loose and it required 8 shims. Bike runs great. Two hours labor which wasn't bad IMO. Carbs were also messed up a bit. Nice to have a good mechanic, pricey but you really get what you pay for at my dealership. No complaints. I was right on with my jetting which was encouraging. (Unifilter, snorkel removed, 40 pilots, baffelectomy with two plates drilled, 120 mains, Thruxton needles, 1 shim) Carb synch kit next purchase.

I'm a bit fascinated that all the valve clearances were loose. That is actually kind of amazing to me. Mostly valves tighten up as the shims get pounded down; they seldom loosen. I would be much interested in how out of spec they were and if others have also experienced this.

One good thing is that marginally loose valve clearances usually cause few problems where over tight ones can cause big trouble.

Thanks for the info.

I didn't ask the clearances but like you, he said that better loose than tight.

what makes them get tight is valve face and seat wear (valve goes into the seat farther.cam wear will make them get loose. but then who knows how they are new for sure?

Mike: Help me out here. My understanding, little as it is, is that the shims are designed to prevent what you discribe, which is the "result" of worn shims, or out of spec shimming from the beginning, not the "cause." Otherwise, what are shims for? Am I wrong on that?

Your point about the original clearances is very good. Who, indeed, knows what they were at the beginning? I hardly think any dealer would bother to check out the original shim settings in order to have baseline data to help determine what is happening to the valve clearances over time. Nah! That's to logical.
