Removed my AI a couple weeks back and bought my paint yesterday. Just want to know what type of prep I would need to do prior to painting them. What type of cleaner, any sanding, steel wool scuffing...? Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

I used a sanding block from home depot, 500 or 600 grit I think, layed down a coat of the BBQ black, let it dry, then buffed it with 000 steel wool, then used about 4 more coats of the paint, with steel wool in between each coat, and after the last one.

It smokes like crazy (and stinks) the first time you fire up the bike, but after it cures it is a pretty durable finish. I love the look!

Haven't done this but considering it for a winter project. Here's a tip, and I may be way off, but it seems logical. I bought a wood stove last winter, and it is painted black. The manufacturer recommended building a couple small fires and letting it cool between fires to cure and harden the paint. You might want to start up, let it run 1 minute, shut off to cool to ambient temp, then repeat a couple more times. Then again you may just want to get out and ride it!
