So i just picked up an 02 bonnie with 6000 miles on her. Both my parents ride big harleys and this is my first bike. Hopefully should be going through the training course and getting my license in the next few weeks.

The PO took good care of the bike mechanically but cosmetically was from the "rather be riding than cleaning" school.

Any ways, i got it home spent some time cleaning it up and noticed the fork tubes have some nicks on them with some rust showing probably about 2.5in from the top of the tube. I belive they're far enough up they shouldn't cause a problem with the seals but i could be wrong. Should i be worried at all? ocan i just hit them with a fine polishing stone?

I could probably get some pictures up tomorrow

Congrats on the ride. Don't worry about the nicks. Just get your course done, good luck with your test and ride.

Congrats! Ignore the nicks for now and just catalogue a list of things that you think you'd like to fix, change, etc. Then after you have some miles on the bike, like a couple of thousand, look at the list and see if you still want to do it. Try not to fix things unless they are actually broken, and try to get a baseline idea of the bike and its performance before you change things. It is really cool to know what you bought before you start mucking with it.

If the couse is an MSF course they will provide bikes for you to ride. Pick out the smallest one, preferably 125cc, and no larger than a 250cc. Do not ride the Bonnie because it is infinitely easier to pass the course with a small, nimble, bike.

Thanks for the pointers. I just wanted to make sure i shouldn't have to worry about the nicks hurting the seals in the forks. Other than that it doesn't really bother me

Here in RI its mandatory to take the class and they wont let you use your own bike anyways.

+1 to what Mecscc said. And you'll know soon enough if the nicks in the forks are a problem. If they're not, you'll forget about them.

Congrats Tweekedknee. The MSF course to me is the best thing since sliced bread. I'm going to be taking the advanced course sometime this summer and probably at least every other summer after that to break bad habits that constantly sneak up. Also, welcome aboard. I'm a newbie as well and am already very impressed with so many of the other folks on here. Always willing to give advice and help out. I have a new '07 T100 and am anxious to start adding goodies and such, but am finding out that I need to prioritize. The bike is stock, but I'll be changing things as time goes by. Right now, long ride comfort is to be addressed. The stock seat sucks! After that, I'll focus on performance, then some minor cosmetic items. There's no major hurry. Get used to your current ride and enjoy! Good luck.

Congratulations. As 6000 miles is not a lot so you should have yourself a really good one there. Ride safe, ride fun!
