Pardon the pun, but spoke with a local mechanic who says he can make the wheels tubeless with some technique he has developed. This means stock spoke wheels and tyres and no tubes... and so when you get a flat, you can simply plug them. Apparently he has been doing this for years and has a 36 month guarantee for workmanship.
Has anyone else heard of something similar. I am guessing it is like coating the rim with a flexible sealant.

I have not heard of anything like that, but Sunday after cutting a tire, and having the bike trailered in to Acme Motorcycles (independant dealer) the mechanic showed me a BMW with spoke wheels which were tubless, as the spokes came through the outer edge of the rim, cleaver idea, have your cake and eat it too :-D

These guys were offering the same service some years ago.

They appear to have stopped offering this service.

I would be concerned about the materials the OE rims are designed & made of.
Rather than possibly increasing the risk of failure with what may well be a flawed product I would suggest starting anew.

Personally I am seriously considering getting a set of tubeless rims made by these guys: http://www.woodyswheelworks.com/[addsig]

I have seen spoke wheels made tubeless, and i am not referring to the BMW design either (although the BMW wheels do look killer).

it can be done easily enough, but results vary. The nipple area of the rim is sealed with RTV silicone. The stuff is applied from a caulk gun and spread out with a bondo spreader. It takes a fair amount of RTV to lay a thick enough spread to seal everything up, but it can be done, and still weighs less than the tube and flap.

If you try this on your own you take your life in your own hands. I accept no responsibility for anything negative that results from your attempt at this.

You can see how one fella did it at
http://teamincomplete.com/Boxer/boxerhome.html

this guy did a cafe BMW air head bike, but the part that is of interest is the tubeless spoke wheels he sealed up from tube type rims. the whoel build is interesting, and I personally woudl love to get a ride on that monster. it is supposed to be built up even more now, but who knows if he has done anything else with it....
