I'm planning on painting my headers with bbq paint in the next couple days but I wanted to make sure there wasn't anything other than standard tools I needed to make this happen. Are there any gaskets that I need to get first? any one time use bolts or anthing on that area of the bike I need to be worried about? thanks in adavance.

I`ve been BBQing my pipes and then lightly buffing them down with #0000 steel wool for a nice satin sheen.[thanks 5Bassman] I use Rustoleum in the rattle can. Dries fast, will hardly burn off with a torch. I didn`t prepare the pipes other than wiping them down clean. I`ve used the same copper o-ring a dozen times, with a little Permatex ultra copper sealant on each side. Never had leakage at the spigot. The nuts on the spigots are 12mm. They may be rated for one time usage because they seem to tighten up about 1/2 way down each stud. After messing with them a few times.I just switched to 12mm nuts and lock washers. They don`t bind in the middle of the studs and don`t come loose even after repeated install/removals.

Cool, Thanks. Another quick question. I haven't looked at it closely yet so this may be a no brainer. Is there any issue taking off the headers with the crossover on the bottom?

edit:

Disregard. I got out there and started messing around and decided to do it. I didn't think it was going to be too difficult until I started and then thought "oh, *****! what did I get myself into" then realized it wasn't all that bad.

Rod,
I'm guessing you use the steel wool after everything has hardened up right?

Got 'em done and on this morning. A little smoke out of the right one when I started it up, I think some of the cleaner i used wasn't all gone and it cooked off.

I'm really enjoying working on the bike and I've not done anything too serious yet. waiting to get my move done and I'll be chopping the fenders, getting a smaller brakelight and relocating the turn signals (front & back)

Mine are BBQ'd black too. The stuff smokes like crazy the first time you start it up.

I used high heat header paint, and only one of them smoked. Probably the cleaning solution. I'll look at taking the reflectors off in a bit, I keep forgetting about them, until someone mentions them and then they stick out like a thumb for a while. SCCTrim, I did paint the clamps that's why there's a black band on the exhaust can, that's the clamp.
