After serious consideration, I've decided not to go with the factory flyscreen. I had a Dart flyscreen for a time, but sold it after only a few months. Had it been clear, I may have kept it. I just didn't care for the smoke tint... not sure why. But other than that I kinda liked it.

So I was wondering what's your take on the best possible way (for good looks, durability and longevity) to get a plastic Dart flyscreen black. I never had much luck painting plastic, or painting at all for that matter. I know there's paint available just for plastic applications now. But would like a few different ideas.

Can anyone think of something better than paint made for plastic?

Couldn't you just tint it with limo black?

A couple of Canadian suggestions:

Duct tape - otherwise known as Saskatchewan chrome - for a silver finish.
Hockey tape for that chic black finish. :-D

I've heard of ppl painting windshields on the inside. Gives a deep black tone. Best to use a fairly plexible paint, but the dart shield is pretty stiff, so the paint shouldn't crack.

RD,

At my shop in STL we paint acrylic - and occasionally polycarbonate - on a daily basis, essentially using automotive polyurethane with some additives - polycarbonate takes a special precoat that acrylic doesn't need - either way, the finish is tough and durable as hell - not sure there's a better way to get a good looking (professional) result other than to do it that way...

It'd be interesting to know just what plastic the Dart is - acrylic or polycarbonate or ...?

As far as the "plastic paint" like krylon makes... I've been reasonably impressed with it - use it regularly on bracket mock ups machined out of acrylic... looks good for a spray bomb... not durable like catalyzed automotive polyurethane though - hot solvent will eat it quick... takes a couple of weeks to really toughen up... still an option though...

Another way to do it - probably less slick result but still passable - would be
to install black conformable pressure sensitive vinyl over the entire screen... it's always a bit of a challenge on compound curves, but probably doable... and removeable if you decide you don't like it...

Cheers,

D9

Thanks Seth,

Polyurethane sounds like the way to go. Now go check your emails.

Isn't there a black screen out there? I know I've seen one on a bonnie or 10 here. It's black plastic and has a chrome trim ring. You could paint the trim piece too.

Jeff,

I think you're referring to the National Cycle flyscreen. It comes in a dark tint, but not quit the blacked-out effect I want to try out. Thanks anyway.

Dark tint National Cycle flyscreen, as shown here...
