I have always run regular gas in my 02 because the previous owner did. I only noticed today the handbook calls for 89 min. Is there a knock sensor that retards the ignition on the lower grade gas?

Yes, there are knock sensors. They hang off either side of your head and they are know to laypersons as ears.

If you haven't noticed any knocking chances are the gas you are using is fine. This doesn't mean that the gas will remain fine, like on a really hot day in heavy traffic and under heavy load. Just keep listening and adjust as necessary.

Filled mine one day w/ regular by habit (car). It didnt feel any different? I am sure over time it woulldnt do the engine any good? Kinda ironic that was the day I had the tank geyser ! Maybe thats why it didnt explode - crappy gas? It made a huge vapor cloud on that hot engine ! :???:

capt don, "crappy gas" as you call it will ignite easier than premium grade gas. Higher octane = more resistance to premature ignition (aka knock). I doubt there's enough of a difference to make the gas ignite or not ignite on a hot engine, but low octane fuel would be the easier to ignite.

Hehe, no. The electronic ignition on this bike isn't quite that advanced.

In laymans terms, octane represents the resistance to pre-detonation due to pressure or heat. The higher the octane rating the higher the resistance. If the engine isn't pinging (pre-detonating) then there isn't any issue with using lower octane fuel.

I'm surprised 89 is even suggested. Is that american or european rating? (average or RON rating). The american rating is a couple of points below the european. The engine is such low compression that it can probably run safely on some pretty cruddy gas.

Speaking of gas, I always buy premium for my bikes, a habit from feeding the old british iron in the stable, but I was told to use the 87 with my new bonnie.
What's the recommendation?

The manual says octane of 95 RON minimum. Is RON the same octane rating used in the USA?
