Is the first step to disconnect and check the cable?

Yup, probably broken about 3" in from the end. Make sure you white grease the new core.

Yep, broken cable. Actually about 12" or so down from the top. Dealer is ordering a new one for me, $38

At least I know to periodically check and lube now.

Kinda makes me wonder what my brake lines look like...
