I was thinking of mounting some daytime running bullet lights...can anyone advise if the marker/position light wires will handle 10 amps or so? Is taking the #10 , 5amp fuse up to a 10 amp just too risky?

Do I have to run extra wires and install a relay?

The front indicators are switched and have a blinker relay attached to them. It is probably not a good idea to power running lights through the indicator circuit.

Find out the maximum wattage of your running lights. Given the amp values you provided here are the conversion to power:

5amp * 12volt = 60watts
10amp * 12volt = 120watts

Do the running lights combined with whatever load is on the circuit fit well within those values?

A second idea would be to buy some dual filament turn signals. One filament is always on and the other is the 'blinker'. This is how the brake light works. You'd have to wire the always on filament to the ignition or a switched power lead.

A third idea would be to wire the indicators so they are on when not in use and flash when in use (versus off when not in use).

I'm talking about the marker/indicator (Haynes speak) in the headlight, not the turn signals...

Ah, you mean the thing that drains your battery when you turn the key the wrong way.

Is that bulb on when the bike is running?

I spliced a wire into the "parking" light (little bulb inside the headlight shell) to power my dual filament turn signals to make them "running" lights as well as turn signals. I don't remember schit about electricity from school, so I don't know if that is safe. All I know is several thousand miles and rainstorms later, no blown fuses or melted wiring. Don't ask me what wattage the bulbs are in the dual filament turn signals. Just your average OTC aftermarket dual filament turn signals.

Thrux,
Should be about 5 watts apiece (like the tail light)....so at least the little parking bulb hookup is good for 10 watts. Thanks for the feedback.
cw,
Yes, mine is on all the time, right along w/ the headlight.

I'm using the parking light circuit to run LED clusters in Kurlyn (sp?) Silver Bullets which I mounted with NewBonneville.com's signal relocation bracket (mounts with the rectifie/regulator bolts) Nice combo, easy install. I don't use the park lite bulb anyway since I installed a sealed beam headlight. The original Kurlyn lights were much too bright to be left on at night so I got direct replacment base LED clusters. I didn't run the Kurlyn bulbs off that circuit thought, really felt the draw would be too high.

Thanks merlin!
Nice pics...just what I was thinking but I forgot all about using LED clusters. Brilliant!
Low wattage, last forever, safety markers...just what I wanted.
Looks great too.
