I usually set my chain tension with a ruler, then eye it up to get it strait, and the bike feels good, so all is well.
I got a chance to use a laser chain tool, and I'll tell ya, my eye aint so great no more. Not only that, but those marks on the chain tensioners are not to be trusted either. I'm going to take the 80 dollar plunge and buy the laser tool, they work great

I have never seen one for chains. Do you think you could use a Laser leveler for wall pictures ? Lot cheaper.

Yeah something like that could probably be made to work. The thing about the tool, its very short, so it fits on the chainwheel with the chain in place. Then, the laser is precisly aligned with the edge of your chain, so all you have to do is sight along it. If you want to save money a mechanical version is availablbe for about 25 bucks, but the laser is so fast and handy its worth it to me

I've got an infrared thermometer with laser which I tape to the frame while alligning the laser beam on the wheel. Works great...I bet a cheapy laser pointer device would work also.

Hi Guys

Strange this should come up now.

I just had my bike dyno'd for the first time.
The dealer serviced it last after fitting a new chain and sprockets, that was prior to my mods but the wheels hadn't been touched.
Dealer had the chain so far out, it was 1 1/4 inch off centre on the dyno guys alignment bench. He couldn't keep hold of her properly in the dyno until it was adjusted.
so he put it right for me and told me not to trust the marks as-well.

I'd post some pics and results but my scanner and camera don't seem to take low enough resolution pics for up loads.

Any idea's.

By the way bike runs fantastic, slightly rich at the low end and slightly rich at the top end however all well within safe limits, but bang on between 70 - 90 MPH.

Where as before she would creep up to the Ton, I now find my self giving her a sharp blip for a 5 seconds at 75 and by the time I get a chance to look at the speedo again and shut the throttle, she's rolling back down to the Ton from about 108 MPH.

I got 18T front sprocket and I'm hitting the Ton at 6,100 RPM.
I haven't opened the throttle fully yet.

She's also returning 65 miles to an imperial gallon thats 5 litre's metric or 8 pints in UK.
