Only 200 miles on my new speedy and I need to carry some personal stuff and a minimum tool kit. I want to keep the bike clean, so I would like to go for a fork bag because a center bar bag would cover instruments. What small bag works good with fork travel?
For mainland riding I am leaning toward a tank bag which will not damage the black paint, is this possible? I'm thinking I can lift it off quickly and carry it to the motel room rather than having saddle bags which do not keep the bike looking clean. Any suggestions will be appreciated as I have already spent a fortune in safety riding gear, and wish to keep the wife happy not making mistakes on bags.

Look at the pic in my signature. It's a regular fork bag mounted out of the way. The only thing to remember if you do this is that you probably need to buy locally so you can see if the mounting system will work on the downtubes. I asked the shop where i got mine if i could leave a credit card and take it outside to my bike and hold it up to the tubes and see if the straps lined up in a way that i was sure i could make it work. Not all bags will work there, so buying online may results in several returns. Mounting a fork bag on the forks will mar the fork shrouds, which is another reason i opted for this method.

If you mount a tool bag on the fork, attach some soft material to the point where the bag touches the metal, or the finish could get marred as Daz points out..
Or you can fabricate a light metal frame to mount the bag. That has worked best for me. Good luck.

I'm down with the down-tube thing ,I'm gonna do that,I'll fit it first though. Now, I would like to fit another, didn't know about marring the forks glad to know about it. Frame? sort of like a mini picture frame and did you guys attach it where the light kit bolts go? These days are a little rough ,nickel rich and a dollar short, barely can afford to pay attention...just kidding. I wanted to get the Newspeedmaster.com locking hard bags but I've heard that they are not as roomy as one would think anyhow not an option right now have to settle for the front bags and will keep them on the bike until I can work into a decision about the rear bags and lot's of overtime.

I have a bag mounted on the down tubes (tool kit) and one on the forks for randon stuff that I want to carry.
the fork mounted bag is riveted to a piece of aluminum sheet that is bent at a right angle and attached to the lower triple clamp using the two 8mm holes already located there.
It was easy to make and cost very little. And it keeps the bags from rubbing the fork shrouds ( as Daz mentioned)
I think you can see both bags from my signature line link.

Thanks for all your help.
I will post a picture soon after making the purshase and install.
The fork bag I saw on Speedblastr's looks good for me. Where did you purchase the bag?
I have a line on a tank bag which I will fit on my bike tomorrow from a friend here on Orcas. He claims it has not scratched his black tank in thousands of miles. My black tank seems to scratch just looking at it, smile. Thanks for noting how easy marring can happen on da metal parts also.
