Hello,

i finally reached 500mi on my bonne black and now it needs servicing. the only triumph location is booked with appointments until the end of the month and that's just too long.

i was thinking maybe my friend whos pretty good with motorcycles can check out the bike for me but i'm not too sure what the dealer checks for besides changing the oil. any help??

the lady i talked to said that most peeps bring it in between 500 to 1000 miles for their first service but that seemed kinda wrong to me.

well, i want to service it so that i get rid of the metal and pretty much tune it up so that i can ride it more aggressively. do i just wait and store my bonne or what? *****....

Mainly it is to change the oil and filter. If your buddy is mechanical, he can help you with chain/cable adjust and a good overall exam for loose hardware. My understaning is it is not a requirement for warranty needs.

Well, mainly oil and filter but my dealer also did a carb balance which made bike run a heck of a lot better.

But if you cant get to a dealer go ahead and do oil and filter as a minimum. Check all fasteners, chain, cables, anything you can get to.

All the requirements for the various periodic services are in your Owner's Manual.

If the dealer does not do the service, keep records of who did the service when and keep receipts for the appropriate oil and filter.

Oh, and Triumph says your breakin is not finished until 1000 miles, so you might want to read that section as well before riding it "more aggresively".

Yeah, change the oil and filter and document that, and look it over. I wouldn't stop riding it, that's not why you bought it.

It shouldn't need much else that you're not already checking on a regular basis, like tire pressure--very important, chain adjustment, clutch adjustment. It can go another few hundred miles until the dealer can do the official check. I wasn't able to bring in mine until 600 miles, I didn't want to stop riding it.

Since it's the initial checkup, you might want to buy the official Triumph oil and filter from the dealer so you have proof of doing the right thing at 500 miles, although you're certainly not limited to those products in future.

Make the appointment so the dealer can do his thing when he can, and leave out the oil change that you've already done at that point.

That's my opinion only, hopefully your dealer is supportive and won't get weird about warranty issues, you could ask first.

Kidkazi,

I don't think you really need to take it to the dealer and as long as you keep the paper work for proof in the event of any trouble you should be ok. If you want to take it in for service take it to CyclePro Hawaii (formerly SuperBikes Hawai), their great guys over there in Aiea near Cutter Ford. Hey, we should meet one day and maybe go for a ride. I sent a couple PMs your way and never heard back. Hope to hear from you! :-D

What does the dealer do for a 500mi service?

Nothing that is worth the cost of the service.

Being a newbie I took mine to the dealer. He topped up all levels, cleaned and lubed the chain, checked for tension, changed the all, checked carb sync, checked all cables, adjusted the clutch to my specs, gave me lots of good advice, test rode the bike, gave me a free can of chain wax and charged me $110 cdn ( about 90US ). I consider it money well spent, the service went into my service book ( helps when selling).

I will do the next oil change myself but will take it back to the dealer for the next major service.

The going price here is around $200. In Hawaii... probably even more.
But there it also includes a Leis.
