I have a 2007 america with 1500+ miles on it.Had service done at 500 miles with accessories installed at that time.It appeared to shift slight clunk and was told all triumph clunk.Well at 1400 miles started to clunk embarrassedly and when I checked the oil(with flashlite to see level),I added a quart of mobil1 synthetic,It brought the level 1/2 way between the lines.Today it appears as though it uses some oil and am not sure this is normal.I returned to riding after 40 years and my old triumphs ALWAYS took oil at fill up!!Should I be more dilligent at checking or is this a potential problem? Thanks for your imput.

That's definitely not right. I have never had to add oil between oil changes (6000 mi). Whatever oil is lost in 6000 miles is less than I can detect using the little window. Also shifts are more a nice crisp "click" rather than a "clunk". I think you need to revisit your dealer.

Hever had to add oil between normal services, done 48000kms so far.
I have always had a little clunk when changing but now hardly notice it.
suggest you get it checked out?????

Oh no no more oil spells the tree hugers are going to sick Al Gore on you. I personally have noticed after each oil change on my 05 Speedmaster I have to go back and retighten the drain plug after I start it up and let it warm up,and cool down again. It always seems to need a little snugging.I also run an extra or a thicker oil plug gasket or washer because it seems the threads on the drain plug on my bike are not cut or threaded back far enough to allow it to tighten suffiecently with just one stock sealing washer or gasket.Take a close look at your drain plug if it's wet this possibly could be the problem with your bike.

I agree with all the suggestions- especially checking the tightness of the drain plug (a common error when people change oil on 4 wheelers). I added a quart at about 8500 miles (last change was between 5 and 6000. I can see where a dealer underfills when changing the oil (rather than overfilling) and also, it is not uncommon for a good engine to use oil between changes- I've been told. Is the oil the correct viscosity? Also, I have a clunk here and there when the engine/tranny are cold in the morning but then it goes away- but I have had an occasional clunk from the tranny usually when coming to a stop, but I wouldn't let it bother me.

Have you always checked the oil under the same conditions? The oil level appears very different depending on how you check it. If you're always checking it the way the book says, then you're certain to get a good reading. If you're checking it some other way, just make sure you check it *consistently* the same way, and only compare apples to apples, so to speak.
If you're sure you're really losing oil and not just misreading it, then definitely have it checked out by the dealer.

thanks for the replys and suggestions.I went and changed the oil, replacing the mobil 1 with amsoil 20/50.Now it shifts much better and quieter although sometimes noisy into first. Not at all clunky as before and 100 % better.I will continue to check level consistenly as I now know the level and product.90 miles and it seems fine..perhaps dealer did not fill at last change...quanity of oil not listed on work order. Thanks again and I will repost if problem resurfaces!

make sure your clutch cable is adjusted correctly as well.
it should not be all that clunky going into first

Hi Odatbob
My 2005 America with 8500 klms on it clunks every time you put it into first, also if you don't get the gear change spot on it also sometimes clunks between gears. My sons Speed master is exactly the same. I have just had my engine removed and stripped looking for a Whine in 2nd,3rd & 4th gears about 40 to 50 Klms /Hr. There was also a suspect coppery looking material in the oil, anyway nothing was found and I am continuing to ride it. I have just completed a 2500Klm trip and the whine seems to be decreasing. I am also of the idea that I am going to try a 20W-60W Penrite Oil which will also help dampen the Clunk as well as hopefully eliminate the whine in the gearbox. Incidentally during the 2500Klm ride I actually took the bike back to the original dealership where it came from and had them inspect it and they said the noise was common to all Triumphs of this design and that it was quite OK.
