I am not convinced that at the 500 mile service that they filled to proper level..now have 200+ miles since switching to 20/50 amsoil and no drop in level...I am going on 600 mile roundtrip fathers day weekend to Lolo pass and that will be real test at sustained highway travel, warmer weather and riding with the Cycle Barn RAT group."In good hands..."

Careful tighening the drain plug - the sump casting is thin there and people have cracked it. Do change the crush washer each time.
The clunk is a bit normal, try dropping into first with the brakes off, the bike should not lurch foward - if it does, adjust the clutch.

When I brought my used 04 home the first thing I did was change the oil to the manual proscribed 10W40 (Amsoil). After 250 miles I changed again to 20W50 (Amsoil) and that satisfied me and the engine and clutch behaved properly. That was a pricey lesson. Also, I found after a thorough draining the engine capacity was 4 quarts to the top line in the sight window. No apparent oil use in the past 1200 miles. I think you may have been under filled with oil one grade too light.
