Had to switch to reserve tank just as I got to work today. How much gas is left in the tank at that point?

I'm new to my bonnie so I have been keeping a careful watch on mine. Basically (and consistantly) the reserve is about 1 gallon. My MPG has been improving after the break in period as well so I have some good solid numbers. during the break in period I was getting an awful 25-28 mpg but as the engine has worn in i consistantly get 37 mpg. So in theory you have 1 gallon of gas to get to the petrol station.

So in theory if traffic is not too bad and I have close to 300 miles on the bike. I should be able to make it to the closest safe gas station which is about 11 or 12 miles away. There are some closer but I would rather run out of gas than get killed pumping it.

Since I work in a federal buillding I can't bring a weapon to work even though our wonderful ex-president Carter insisted that when possible all federal buildings should be built in the inner-city to help encourage growth. All it's done in reality is provide additional targets for thugs and hoodlums. I almost got walked into by a pedestrian yesterday coming to work. I was going about 40mph and he looked at me the whole way slowly strolling out directly into my path. I almost hit him with the hand i was flipping him the bird with.

Thanks for the information

You should be able to ride to the nearest safe station. The tank capacity and the usable amount of gas are two different things. There have been several threads about this. Because the tank is split by the spine of the bike, it is almost impossible to use all the gas in the tank, even on reserve. My practice has been to find a station within 15-20 miles of going to reserve. I get 40 mpg. Now that I've switched to a Pingel petcock, I've got to figure it all out again, as it uses one tube rather than two to provide "On" and "Reserve" functions. Given the great variation in mpg reported by different riders, it is hard to give anything but a cautious guesstimate.null

I always have a gallon - or a bit more - left when I hit reserve.

Right, but there is no way to get access to all of it because of the way the tank is constructed. A few have added a petcock on the other side, but that's a pricey mod because you have to weld nuts so the petcock can be screwed into them. Some folks have leaned the bike toward the petcock to try to move enough gas over to that side, but only if they've run out of gas--it's heavy.

There must be something wrong with my bike, if LoVel is only looking for fuel after 300 miles that is equivalent to 480 kilometres. My bike consistently gets around 200 km before reserve is needed.

The furthest I've reached on reserve (without shaking the tank to coax out the trapped fuel) is 14 miles. Apparently this varies a bit, but don't count on a gallon's worth of fuel...you'll end up walking. To be sure, carry a small gas can with you and ride out your reserve. You'll see what I mean.

I had to get that last little bit of fuel out when I repainted my bike. Even with the tank off, it took me some time to get all that fuel out. Shaking the bike around like Steve McQueen won't unleash another 10 miles. In short, when you hit reserve find a service station pronto.
