My bike turns over but won't catch. I checked and no spark(with new plugs). A friend told me to put a new coil on it. What do you guys think?

You may end up needlessly replacing part until you find the cause. If you get no spart at all the coild would have to be way dead. You should be able to use an ohmeter and check the coil, not 100% cause they can break down once they get hot but since yours is dead all the time this would potentially let you know if it is the coil. I forget what a typicaly coil should read in ohms......anyone remember?

It could be the pick up sensor, CDI or even fualty kill switch.

The cost of one part replaced that didn't need to be would pay for labor at a shop to diagnos the problem.

Good luck and of course share your findings please!?!?!?

Thanks-I should probably get it to the dealer. With a bad kill switch it wouldn't turn over, would it?

I don't think it would turn over with a bad kill switch.

Now I'm completely confused-went to cover up the bike till the dealer comes to get it,stuck the key in ignition for the heck of it -and it started right up! I'm riding it but I'm afraid I'll get stranded again.Short somewhere?

I'd disconnect, clean, grease, and reconnect everything in the ignition circuits and hope it doesn't happen again. If it's an intermittent part, there isn't much else you can do until it happens again, unless you have spares to swap out.

Is it still under warranty? If so, make sure that your dealer knows about it to establish the date.

In order of Frequency of Failure (from my dealer)

1. Kickstand Switch
2. Clutch Switch
3. Ignition Pickup
4. Coils
5. CDI box

My CDI would not allow the bike to start when it got hot. It was a fun one for me to reproduce for the dealer, but they were determined to find the problem and fix it.

It's perfect now.

Monkeyboy, he says it turns over. This would eliminate the clutch switch and the kickstand switch as causes of the problem.

That's what I said, but my dealer said that Triumph wanted them to replace them first. Same with the kill switch on the bars, but it wasn't replaced on mine.

I would have them check the Ignition pickup first. Seems to be somewhat common that they go out.
